If it were not for the opportunities provided by CAT, and the exceptional instruction provided by its teachers and staff, I would not have been able to make it this far. I will be forever grateful for the program and everything it has done for me.
The CAT program was an invaluable experience -- it helped make science and engineering fun. I came up through art-focused elementary and middle schools (which I enjoyed immensely), however when the choice for high school came up I had to answer this question: “Do I want to do art forever as a career, or possibly make a real difference, and do something interesting?” So I came to the CAT program with this mindset. I wasn’t especially interested in science or engineering to start with; I just saw it as a step in the “right” direction. The only real classes I had interest in were those in the robotics route and I thought of them as an artistic outlet of sorts. However, when I took the engineering class, I became enamored with it.
Fast forward through four years of CAT and I had grown to enjoy the sciences and developed a love for designing robots. I had honed several rudimentary skills like programming and CAD modeling, and had attained certifications in several software packages. I had even gotten back to my roots and enrolled in art classes once again. CAT provided me many opportunities to learn, grow, and follow my interests. Over my years I participated in several sports and made friends that will last me a lifetime. From the great teachers and staff, to the program’s unique culture, CAT provided an inclusive environment for everyone involved to learn, develop as a people, and work in teams.
I am now a second year student at the University of British Columbia in the mechanical engineering program. The University is a leader in sustainability and is widely considered a world class university through its rigorous curriculum and large number of international students. If it were not for the opportunities provided by CAT, and the exceptional instruction provided by its teachers and staff, I would not have been able to make it this far. I will be forever grateful for the program and everything it has done for me. I would highly recommend it for any determined student, especially those with a nerdy quirk, or a love for the sciences.Ryan Murch, Class of 2015
